Fiddletabs

This project, which will be released under the GNU Public License, is intended to be a resource for beginning fiddle players who have difficulty reading either sheet music or the standard abc text format which is out there. The software will translate either abc or MusicXML files into a tabulated format which is easy for a fiddle player to understand. This fiddle tab format is originally reputed to have been used by the County Kerry Sliabh Luachra fiddle player Padraig O'Keeffe to teach his students early in the last century. It would be nice to have this available to fiddle students around the world.

The main part of the software currently is an XSL (Extensible StyleSheet Language) stylesheet which transforms MusicXML into an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) document. I have attached this stylesheet to this support request for your perusal. There are open source tools available (such as ABC2XML) for translating abc into MusicXML and I intend to use one of these as part of my build chain for the final SVG output. I chose SVG as an output as it is the best language for graphical display of XML information and there is a wide degree of support for it. Although initial development will concentrate on making the project function from an ANT build file, I foresee this as being possibly hosted in a web application.
